About my work

I work to discover the secrets of the universe——and often find fun applications along the way.

My expertise in theoretical physics spans quantum and classical stochastic processes, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and the physics of information. I'm currently obsessing over whether sufficiently intelligent agents converge to universal representations of the world, and the implications for human-AI relations.

Beyond physics

I enjoy writing, coding in Python, building predictive mathematical models, linear algebra, long walks on the beach. Who doesn’t?

In 2023, I co-founded the Beyond Institute for Theoretical Science (BITS) together with Alec Boyd. BITS nurtures community enthusiastic about the physics of information (broadly interpreted), and creates new opportunities for courageous investigation to thrive. I’m especially proud of our epic workshops.

In 2024, I co-founded Simplex together with Adam Shai. We are building on the best of both physics and computational neuroscience to develop a new science of intelligence. The understanding we develop should bring clarity to AI safety and optionality for humanity as we see ourselves anew in the post-Copernican light of pervasive intelligence.
